Dichroic Glass
What is Dichroic glass?
In the 1960’s NASA developed the process of creating dichroic glass for use in face shields in space suits. The process of creating dichroic glass is to deposit multiple micro-thin layers of different metals (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium, silicon) to the surface of the glass. The glass is then kiln fired at extreme temperatures in a vacuum.
Today, glass artists around the world fuse dichroic glass with other glass in multiple firings to create unique one of a kind jewelery. When dichroic glass jewelry is viewed at slightly different angles, you can see a variety of different colors as it is rotated. The word Dichroic means two colors, it appears to be one color when seen by reflected light and another color when light is shining through it.
